Art Bio Sonja Wilker
Sonja is a bookworm, computer nerd, choc-aholic, tea and
movie addict, that loves hiking and the outdoors.
My art would love to be an honest and authentic expose of my
position in the here and now with all its imperfections; a rebellious reaction
to art that needs to be.... pretty, functional, decorative, perfectly rendered,
and so on. For me art is not a destination, but a journey, ever exploring;
more, deeper, further. Arriving to me would mean stagnation, a recipe spells
boredom.
Art offers me a path to my source. It is an indirect path,
sometimes confusing, often frustrating. I get lost along the way disoriented by
the narrow, blinkered, preconceived ideas of should and ought to; sometimes
way-laid by the fear of judgement by ‘critics’.
To tap into the unconscious driving forces behind my passion
and motivation I loosen the reins of logic and don the mantle of unbridled
mischief. I coax this “inside stuff” out
using various materials making marks, layering, highlighting, covering, pushing
and pulling to bring the painting to a point where the shouts for attention
quieten down to a contented grumbling. The reward is a surprising adventure and ever-broadening
delight in exploring creation /Creation.
I started my exploration in 1983 with life drawing, then life-like
painting, and process-oriented art. Since 2005 my art has taken me through many
ups and downs. My biggest challenge is
finding a sweet balance between giving free reign to my creativity in childlike
abandon and controlling the product with my Germanic, perfectionist, intellectual
side.
I have exhibited mostly in the Western Cape, more
specifically Cape Town: a number of times at Greatmore Art Studios in
Woodstock, with Simonstown Art group, at Nova Constantia in Constantia , and
Trent Gallery in Pretoria. My art has
been used as examples and illustrations in books, and on book covers.
